DOVE’s Community Advocacy Training is a one-night virtual event which is open to the Vashon Island community. Included in this training will be a brief look at privilege and oppression which provides an important foundational understanding of the backdrop behind which interpersonal violence occurs. We will introduce bystander intervention skills and provide a space for in-depth conversation about how we as a community can step in and step up to affect change when violence is occurring. We will also outline how to support healthy relationships with our families, friends, and the larger island community, while learning how to cultivate skills for empathetic and reflective listening when holding space for people potentially struggling with interpersonal violence issues. We will explore basic definitions of gender-based violence and examine the elements of power and control within a relationship.…
